Musical Memories

I know this must be a common thing to happen to people, but when a song comes up on the playlist or radio or whatever, and it triggers instant memories of something.. I know that this happens to me more often than not. I was going through my iTunes list and trying to classify some of my library and it started to happening, and the more I thought about it and scrolled through, the more memories I had. Here’s some of them:

Man On The Moon – R.E.M.
Sitting up till the wee hours of the morning in my girlfriend’s dorm room, talking about anything and nothing (We were only 18 after all).

American Pie – Don McLean
Elizabeth Bay, Manatoulin Island, Ontario (Pine Haven Cottages) – A yearly family trip that had everything we could have wanted – sun, sand, fishing, waterskiing, all our cousins – some of my best memories of childhood.

Wave Of Mutilation – The Pixies
There is a scene in the movie Pump Up The Volume where Christian Slater is walking to school and this song is playing over the top, and everything is very bright, almost a little bit too harsh in the lighting, for some reason it always seemed to me that he was in a mellow, melancholy mood, walking through a world that was a little too edgy and nerve-jangling.

Don’t Talk, Just Kiss – Right Said Fred
My Aunt sent me a cassette sometime when I was younger, and one side had Right Said Fred, and the other had Angel Food For Thought by Meryn Cadell and I’ve never forgotten it, And whenever I hear a Right Said Fred song I think of her. I love the words from DTJK a ton though. “Don’t talk just kiss, let your tongue fool around.” and from Deeply Dippy: “Deeply Dippy about the way you walk, a contact sport, let the neighbours talk”

Angel Eyes – Jeff Healy
This always makes me think of my honey :) Because she has the greatest eyes ever, and even before I met her I always thought this was one of the most touching love songs I’d ever heard.

Amazing Grace – Unknown Piper
This song is so poignant and dignified, I get shivers whenever I listen to it. I envision a group of bagpipers playing at my burial ceremony. My friends and family standing around a small memorial to me (no grave – I’m gonna be creamated) and crying.

Musical conversations…

Some excerpts of a conversation I had on the way to lunch..

“Dude, you can’t buy a flying V, they’re a gimmick guitar…”
“You’re just jealous that *I’M* forming a METAL BAND!!!”

“All I’m saying is that we need to get you away from those 80’s hair bands.”
“Why? Judas Priest is OK, but give me Mr Big any day of the week!”

“You should name your band with some kind of catchy ‘inside joke’, like ‘Looking For Bruce'”
“Who?”
“Bruce Dickenson!!”
“Oh…”
“I just figured it was better than ‘Looking for Dick.. N Son..'”

“Y’know, if you keep listening to Skid Row and Nelson, the metal gods will get you.”
“Then what? Lemmy will fly out of the sky and make me listen to Van Hagar?”

“Ok then, so what’s your band’s name going to be?”
“I don’t know.. something that invokes images of Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest.”
“So ‘Iron Priest’?”
“That’s GREAT!”
“That SUCKS!”
“You’re just jealous that you didn’t think of it.”
“I DID THINK OF IT!”
“Well, you’re just jealous that you’re not in the band.”
“I AM IN THE BAND!”
“Shut up.”

Interview Meme

…via Ealasaid

1. What is the geekiest thing you’ve ever done?
Dang, I’ve done some geeky things in my life.. I worked for a gaming company, I’ve travelled all over north america to gaming conventions, I’ve fixed a computer with leftover wire and bubblegum (really.) I’ve used a computer for more than 48 hours consecutively, I’ve fallen asleep in my college’s computer lab. But, I’ve never made a USB turd, or written fanfic.

2. What’s your single favorite thing about being a parent?
Oh man, another hard one. It’s gotta be the look on my daughter’s face when I come home from work. When she realizes it’s me and sees me for the first time, she gets a huge smile and her eyes light up. It makes me feel like I’m the greatest person in the world.

3. Who’s your favorite Sci-Fi author?
Hmm.. I suppose we’re talking hard-sci fi here. I’d have to say Orson Scott Card. Ender’s Game was possibly the most enthralling book I’ve ever read. I could not put it down, literally. A close second would be Larry Niven though, for Ringworld.

4. What made you decide to start your blog?
Two things, actually. Originally I did it as an exercise in perl, to see if I could write my own content management system. It worked, and for the first year or so I used my homebrewed blog. Once I started to use it more for the content than for the system, I realized that I wanted features that I didn’t have the time and energy to add. So I switched to MT. (but given MT’s new pricing scheme, I might very well go back to my own one and make it more like MT, with the same features that I wanted originally.

5. What is the worst movie you have ever seen?
Well, I suppose again that we’re looking for movies that I wanted to be good and were instead terrible, instead of movies that I knew were terrible, and enjoyed them for that reason alone (A la Buckaroo Banzai…) So that leaves me with ‘To Die For’ – starring Nicole Kidman. Bad. Bad. Bad. I walked out, and that is the first and only time that I have ever done that to a movie that I paid for. Terrible acting, bad plot, and honestly, I couldn’t care about any of the characters.

Official Rules
1. If you want to participate, leave a comment saying, “interview me.”
2. I will respond by asking you five questions – each person’s will be
different.
3. You will update your journal with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview others in
the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five
questions

Stupid Drivers and Bad Memory

So my dealings with moronic bay area drivers has prompted me to create a new category for my classifications: ‘Rants’ – hopefully I won’t have to add too many to this category. I’m heading up north 880 towards Milpitas and some chick in an SUV who is RIGHT BESIDE me, just starts coming over into my lane. Doesn’t look or anything, just starts merging. I had to slam on the brakes, and fishtailed for 20 or 30 yards to not get hit. Then, sunday on my way home from church, I’m waiting at a light to turn onto Hillsdale, and there is a large safety zone at thislight – in front of a fire station. It’s marked ‘keep clear’ and you’re not supposed to clog it up during a red light (in case the fire trucks need to get out. So I stop outside the safety zone, and while I’m waiting for the light, some moron pulls out of the line behind me, swoops past everyone (in the turn lane) and then pulls back into my lane in front of me, planted right in the middle of the ‘keep clear’ zone. Morons, all of them.

Now, about my memory. I was on my way to the light rail station, and I thought of something I needed to blog about. So I wrote a little reminder on my hand – the letters ‘F. P.’ Now that I’m at my computer, do you think I have the slightest clue what ‘F. P.’ stands for? Nope. Not a hope. Not a shred of understanding in my puny little brain. *sigh*

Meetup, Photoblog

Well, lots of interesting things.. my powerbook is in the shop due to the superdrive freaking out, it won’t accept CD’s anymore. So off to Apple it goes. I sent it off before I realized that the book reader scripts I dug up for Ealasaid were on it, but hopefully nothing bad will happen :).

Went to a meeting of South Bay Bloggers last night, among the motley band of malcontents that appeared were:

  • Antwon
  • Ealasaid
  • Courtney
  • Elke
  • Fling93
  • Mark
  • Jonas
  • Jill
  • David
  • Buzz
  • Sylvia

And of course, others I didn’t recognize by sight, or am unable to match faces to blogs (It’s surprisngly difficult, given the topics of discussion at these. Who would guess that Twon, he of the essay-length posts and rambling social commentary would be the person discussing how to blend in with a group of drunk cubs fans at Wrigley Field? The antwon.com bumper sticker holding on his rear fender gives you some idea though…) If I forgot you on this list, let me know (and a small headshot to correspond a face to the name/blog would help!)

And lastly, another denizen of the ether – PitBull has opened a new photoblog that I am going to try to get my photography back on line with. (Right. I barely have time to poop, let alone shoot and crop.)
