My sister Trish is an RCMP officer – has been since a few weeks before the Mayerthorpe Incident that happened last year. Several weeks ago, a different incident claimed the lives of two other RCMP officers near Spiritwood, Saskatchewan. I found out yesterday that my sister and her fiance are being transferred to Spiritwood to replace them. I don’t know what I feel about this – certainly concern, worry and heavy emotion. I suppose that intellectually I knew that there’s a chance that as a cop she could be injured or killed in the line of duty – but this somehow makes it more real. Anyways, prayers and thoughts and good vibes are always appreciated.
Childhood rememberances.
I’ll admit that I’ve had a *bit* too much rum this evening, and that’s probably why I’m thinking of these things.
I have a very vivid memory of when I was around 10 or 11 years old – I was living in Tillsonburg, Ontario, and I loved spending time in the library. I spent most of the summer between 5th and 6th Grade reading. The things I remember most were reading basically the whole Hardy Boys series (after a friend of the family bought me the 2nd book in the series, I was hooked – Thanks Miriam
) and also most of the Tom Swift Jr Series – I remember thinking that the concept of Spaceship X was amazing. Travelling across the stars and meeting aliens was an amazing thought when you’re 10 or 11 years old – as well as solving mysteries…. the only two others books that I distinctly remember was a book about different kinds of racing cars – and one called The Frog, or The Toad that had very darkly tinted windows, and an explanation about how the tinted windows working, and a book about different movie monsters, like Frankenstein and The Blob, and old movies about them.
Ahh, good times.
Surreality
So if someone is delusional or something, do they spend their lives wandering through surreality? is that a word? Damn, I hope so.
Anyways, I had two really surreal experiences this weekend:
About 3 weeks ago I had gone in with Kelly and the fam to get our Passports, but we couldn’t find my birth cert, proving once again, that I was a man without a country. So they put my application on hold. Anyways, while moving stuff around this weekend, we found it, and I went in on monday to get mine finished. Afterwards, I was leaving the office and I was struck by a really spacey feeling, and a voice in the back of my head, saying something like this:
“Why do you need a PASSPORT? That’s for GROWN-UPS! You’re never going anywhere! And if you do, your PARENTS will take you! You’re acting awfully GROWN UP! You’re just a KID! And you’re acting like an ADULT! In about 2 minutes all those adults are going to point at you and someone is going to get you in TROUBLE! You better get on your bike and ride home!”
And the second time was just this morning – I was walking over to Caffe Mac for lunch, and as I came out of IL6 into the quad, I was suddenly struck by ‘fan-boy’ type moment.. like “OMG! This is Apple! And you’re walking around! Where the Mac comes from! Someone’s going to catch you, and you’re gonna get in TROUBLE!”
Then I realized that I *actually* worked there.

Just to add to the whole surrealness of that ‘fan-boy’ moment, the building you walked through, IL6 is where most of the Mac hardware guys work. So maybe you were picking up on some sort of “this is where a Mac begins its life,” vibe in that building.

I do not go softly into that good night
On the way to work I was thinking about what I call the ‘Mortality Complex’, or more accurately the ‘Immortality Falsehood’ – that we all have when we’re young – that we’re immortal.. it’s not until either death comes too close (a relative or friend) or we age and see our approaching mortality that we realize that there’s just an inkling of a possibility that we might not live forever. There’s been some things that I’ve wanted to do, so I’m making my list of stuff to do ‘Some Day’ and also a list of things to read ‘Some Day’. So as I think of them I’ll put them up here.
Weekend
So there’s been lots going on. My mom has come to visit for a couple weeks and that’s cool. We went to see The Lion King musical last saturday for my wife’s birthday, and it was awesome! Friday night we went to see Corteo which was, as BNL says: A, M and Azing (like thelonious monk). THEN to top it all off, I went to WonderCon which was great too. I was mostly hunting for bits and pieces to fill in some runs but I did score one biggie off my list of “Comics To Get Someday” where “Someday” = “No Time Soon Because They’re Too Expensive.” – Daredevil 158, first Frank Miller art on DD. I also got some X-Men in the 100-200 range and I’m getting closer to finishing that whole run (about 60% done) and I’m only a couple issues shy of having Grant Morrison’s whole run on New X-Men too!
The only thing that I found super-surprising was that in the far back corner there were a couple of booths that featured porn stars. Like.. Playboy’s Miss September, 1982. How far do you have to be living in the past to make your living selling 23 year old pictures of yourself.
Other cool costumes: Full Sized Alien (From Alien, Aliens, etc.), Zatanna, 5’6 Boba Fett, Porn Star (although she might not have been in costume…). Ghostbuster, Storm Trooper
Bad Costumes: Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Cyclops, Random Anime.
Well, Peace out Y’all.
