Chinese Wedding

Kelly and I went to our friend Baker’s wedding on saturday. The wedding ceremony itself was fairly standard, but the reception/dinner wasn’t. Baker’s wife Cindy is Chinese, and the reception was done entirely in a chinese style. There was a 10 course meal, dancing lions, all kinds of cool stuff!

Here’s our ten course meal:

1) Appetizers, including BBQ pork and Jellyfish
2) Shark Fin Soup
3) Broccoli & Scallops
4) Honey Walnut Prawns
5)
6) Baby Bok choi and mushrooms
7) Sea Bass
8) Peking Duck and Dumplings (Mu-Shu Duck?)
9) Fried Rice
10) Cake

I’m having difficulty remembering one of the courses. It’ll come to me in time. We were lucky enough to sit with 3 great people, Jason, Felix and Pricsilla, who were gracious enough to let us know what we were eating and what the protocol was, so we didn’t look like foolish Gwai lo!.

geeking

So I just spent like 30 minutes trying to get our friend Liz’s laptop working with my secure WAP and had no luck, until i turned off all the encryption and stuff just to get it to work, and how frustrating it is to work with Windows. I used my mac with it with no difficulty. It just reiterates how much I dislike working with Windows. It’s so un-userfriendly.

Busy Busy

Man, have I been busy. Started my new job last week and it has been consuming me, a lot. My friend Rick has been working there for 3 weeks and we’ve already had some issues with someone, who has decided to move to another group, so that will make our lives easier. Also I have had a few little panic attacks lately – because I’m taking on this new responsibility and occasionally I get a little worried, like “can I pull this off?” I know I have the skillz to do it, but I don’t have that much self esteem, so sometimes I get some self doubt.

On another note, a friend of ours (Kelly and I, that is…) Has decided that she’s giving up her house and moving to SoCal in August to follow her dream, to open up a specialty eatery – that serves Crepes. She is planning to start small in Newport Beach (hopefully) with a custom Crepe Truck and go from there. There’s been some conflicting emotions here, since Kelly doesn’t want her to go, and I am encouraging her to follow her dream. I know that it is never easy to take a risk. 6 years ago I packed a few meager belongings into ‘The Tick’ (my 1985 Ford Escort) and went west (from ontario) to the fabled Silicon Valley, where the streets were paved with stock options. God blesses us all, and sometimes we need to stretch ourselves out of our safe environment to get those blessings.

Good Luck Liz!

More Smells

This weekend I was out doing yardwork and I went into the shed to get out the lawnmower – and was hit by the smell, it took me back to being a young boy and going to my grandparents house, I would love to go into their shed and smell the warm grass-smell, walk around their small backyard and look at how neat, and organized it was. I was fascinated with my grandfather’s small workshop downstairs, how neat he kept everything, hammers hung up by the prongs, little glass jars with nails, screws and fasteners, all labled and organized. Now that they’re both gone there’s no central point in my mom’s family anymore. Their house would be the central meeting place, the point of contact for Christmas, Easter and gossip. Now there isn’t one, and I wonder what will happen in the future… this year there wasn’t any family gathering to speak of (extended family), where there has been one for dozens of years past. I can remember doing it even when I was very small.
